Are we about to cause World War III?
I have news for the Department of Defense: our military escapades aren’t working. We’ve sacrificed thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars, and all we’ve accomplished is to spawn more anti-American sentiment. I understand the problems associated with “negotiating with terrorists”… but we can’t possibly knock them all out. The more people (especially civilians) we kill with our bombs, the more people develop hatred for us.
Yes, America is worried about another 9/11-style attack. But it’s been almost seven years since the original attacks and we still haven’t been able to do anything about it. Even if we knock out Al-Qaeda’s top leaders, they still have plenty of replacements. Every time we blow up a village, all of the villagers want to destroy us. Unless we send a massive military force to knock out all resistance in one huge swoop (without regard to all of the American military casualties and the Afghani civilian casualties), opposition will continue to build. We need to finally understand that most of the people fighting us are brought up in an environment where life is devalued and guns are easier to get than bread… we’re not fighting an army, we’re fighting a wave of sentiment. If we continue doing what we’re doing, the problem will only escalate until it turns into a war of titanic proportions, just like what happened in World War I and World War II.
We can’t kill the sentiment with more guns and more violence. That will just mean that more kids are raised around blood and AK-47’s and more young men have been desensitized to the pain of war. How much longer will it take before we realize that the only solution is diplomacy? We neglected to build schools in Afghanistan after they were destroyed in the war against the Soviets; it wouldn’t be a useful political move for a President who wouldn’t see the effects of the schools until well after the end of his second term. But now that we see the mistake, why don’t we undo it? You can’t fight sentiment with bullets… maybe the best way to fight these groups is to help them. It’s hard to hate the people who are paying for your schools and your food.

You know what the problem is? The United States think they are KING OF THE CASTLE. As a citizen of the US I respect what we’ve done for others and the root of democracy, but cant the leaders of this nation take the hint that they do not have control of the entire world?
Yeah, and it’s not just the fact that we try to control the world… it’s also important to point out that we’re failing at it. It’s just like when the “king of the castle” tries to quell a rebellion by killing all of the rebels’ family members… that’s not exactly the kind of thing that will make people stop wanting to kill you, especially when those “people” are militant Jihadists.
Right on! Do nothing so that the terrorist can take down America! Terrorists RULE. Glad this site is on board. DEATH TO AMERICA!
Well, given your logic for pulling out of Iraq then we should also pull out of the state of Illinois. You know, that is the state that Barack Obama hails from. In Illinois, the big city of Chicago has a ban on guns. Unfortunately, more people, mostly children, are murdered in Illinois than Americans are killed in the WAR in Iraq.
We can’t control violence down the street in Chicago even though we have taken away everyone’s guns. If only we could get Mayor Daley and Senator Obama to act with Diplomacy in Illinois then we could have peace in our neighborhoods.
I’m not saying “do nothing”… education and social policy isn’t “nothing”. What we’re doing right now is only strengthening the terrorist groups… in fact, doing nothing would be much better than doing what we’re doing.
And I’m not using that logic to say that we should pull out of Iraq. We already know plenty of reasons why we should pull out of Iraq. The violence in Chicago is mostly just random gang violence… we don’t have the American military killing innocent civilians in Illinois.
[…] • July 16, 2008 //Yesterday, I wrote about how I think that the Bush-McCain foreign policy can only end with World War III. I received a few angry comments about how it’s apparently important for us to stay in the […]
Since we’ve been in Iraq, what have we really accomplished? Nothing but economic crisis and hatred for Americans.
You’re absolutely right in saying that for every terrorist leader we put out of business, there are probably a lot more ready to take their place. It’s gotta be all or nothing. Those guys are like cockroaches. You’ll never get ‘em all.
You’d think lessons would have been learned from the Vietnam war. Especially lessons like fighting a battle on the enemy’s home ground. We could spend 20 years and still never find all the caves those guys are hiding out in; just like all the tunnels in Vietnam.
Both are wars that never should have started in the first place.
We need to get out of Iraq NOW.
hello my fren,
I totally agree with you.
By invading other country for the sake of oil is crazy.US policy over Palestine is crazy. Try to create tension with Iran about nuclear is totally crazy.
Peace is all we want in this world
