Media Spin: “Republicans hate moms”
I recently read an article in the Washington Post called Republicans vote against moms; no word yet on puppies, kittens, which claims that that “a majority of House GOPs voted against motherhood.”
Well, first off, I don’t see how it’s possible to vote against motherhood. I seriously doubt that these Republicans voted against legislation that said “mothers exist”… how can you vote against an entire concept?
It turns out that the resolution is called “Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother’s Day.” Click here to see the text of the bill. So, this means that they didn’t vote against “motherhood”, but rather a specific resolution about Mother’s Day. If you read the text of the bill, I honestly don’t even see what the point is… it doesn’t seem to actually accomplish anything. I’m not saying that it was OK for the Republicans to vote against it, but why is it such a big deal?
If you do a Google search for “house resolution 1113 mother’s day”, you see a lot of articles about how Republicans apparently hate moms. Are they serious? Do they really expect to get support by taking issues out of context? Pointless arguments like these actually take away from the credibility of the smarter non-Republicans like the rest of us.

Oy, are you kidding me? What a load of hooey. Consider how better their time could be spent, what with the economy, war, etc etc etc.
I thought the phrase “Media Spin” was real appropriate and you’ve sorta swerved into a point on how the language is used to make another class of citizens look bad. A section of government might vote in a particular way on a bill - keep in mind they’re likely comparing 2 evils, the bill is probably huge, zillions of pages long with dozens of special interests squeezed/tucked in all over the place - and the media might say they voted against this or that when it wasn’t taht way at all, they voted FOR this or FOR that. My dad retired from state government and, like veterans, they don’t like to talk about it much because many times you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
