The Optimist’s World
I am an optimist without a country and this is my journal.
(by the way, if you’re reading this on facebook, then this is actually a post from my new blog. The actual address is http://optimistworld.blogspot.com/ )
In the US, I am still considered a Pakistani. Despite spending 13 years living here, working here, and going to school here, I still have not been granted citizenship. Meanwhile, the American public continues to further restrict itself and has started a futile campaign to fight the globalization that we all know is imminent. We refuse to accept that we are part of a grand world economy and that America cannot isolate itself from the rest of the world any longer.
In Pakistan, I am considered an American or a Mohajir (Mohajir = “migrant”; my grandparents migrated to Pakistan from India after the partition in 1947, so I will never be one of the locals). They refuse to accept me culturally, but I don’t mind because I don’t particularly like their cut-throat survival-of-the-fittest stab-you-in-the-back culture. More recently, the abysmal “democratic” decisions of the ignorant and illiterate populace, which is easily swayed by propaganda, are tempting me to give up hope on the state.
But I am an optimist. Here you will find views based on my travels around the world and on my unique perspective as I proceed through the stages of the US citizenship process. You will also undoubtedly see a very interesting array of comparisons and contrasts later this year when I take a trip around the world before I move to Australia for medical school.
Welcome to the Optimist’s World.
